2009 Club Cup

Club Cup will use the World Team Tennis format again this year. To form a team all you need are 3 men and 3 women.

Levels: Open, 4.0, 3.5, or 3.0

Matches consist of:
One Men’s Singles Set
One Women’s Singles Set
One Men’s Doubles Set
One Women’s Doubles Set
One Mixed Doubles Set

Scoring is 1 point for every game won! It’s fast-paced and exciting! AND, as a twist you have the ability to take a player out of a match and substitute another player! Play will be on one weekend in February!
More information will be in the next newsletter but start recruiting your teammates now!

Knotty Problem

Continuing from last month’s theme of cooperation and courtesy on the court.

Out calls corrected and partner’s disagreement on calls.
If a player mistakenly calls a ball “out” and then realizes it was good, the point shall be replayed if the player returned the ball within the proper court. If the player’s return of the ball resulted in a “weak sitter,” the player should give the opponent the point. If the mistake was made on the second serve, the server is entitled to two serves.

Tip of the Month

Remember, when you are playing your match whether it is singles or doubles and you are winning easily and then suddenly your opponent is making a comeback that two things can be happening: First, they are fighting like crazy to stay in the match (the wounded bear syndrome) or secondly, maybe you are becoming too predictable.

Being predictable can allow your opponent to become grooved to your shots and get a rhythm and start feeling better about their game and potentially change the momentum of the match. Remember, particularly when serving because this is when you have the most control, you are initiating the point. Think like a pitcher, don’t keep throwing in the wide slice even though it’s your best serve, your opponent will eventually start to like it. After throwing in some hard first serves, throw a kicker to the backhand as a first serve or a heavy topspin to the body and watch your opponent jump to and fro and out of the way.

Also, not being predictable on spin and speed is good but also do not be predictable with your placement. If you always hit your second serve to the backhand, guess what, eventually your opponent will run around it and clobber you with it. So also be unpredictable with your placement. Doing these things will raise your chances of your opponents not making that dreaded comeback.

Good luck.

What do you thinkWhat Do YOU Think?
We are surveying our members to determine if there is enough interest to have a New Year’s Eve Party. New Year’s Eve falls on a Wednesday night this year. If you would like to attend, be a part of, or help organize the event, please contact Teri or Kati at 325-8652 or you can e-mail your comments to events @ BRCtennis.com.

We would also like to know how many people would be interested in a bus trip to the 2009 Indian Wells Tennis Tournament (formally the Pacific Life Open). The tournament is March 9th ~ 22nd. We have to make arrangements for transportation and tickets soon so, if you are interested in a day trip to Indian Wells, please contact Teri or Kati at 325-8652 or you can e-mail your comments to events @ BRCtennis.com
